Mondegreens

Do you know what they are?

I knew what they were,  I just didn't know there was a name for it!

A mondegreen is generally used for misheard song lyrics, although technically it can apply to any speech.

I usually hear a mondegreen in songs.  For instance:

In the BeeGee's song "More than a Woman", I hear "Bald-headed Woman".

Give me the Beach Boys and free my soul.  Actual lyrics:  Give me the beat boys and free my soul.

I can remember being in church and belting out "Bringing in the sheets, bringing in the sheets, we shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheets."  And in my mind it made sense...we'd all be happy when we had clean sheets to sleep on!

My beautiful, smart daughter is full of mondegreens...mostly in everyday speech!  Bless her heart, she's goofy!

But...she gets it from her dad!

A lot of her modegreens have to do with food.

While in elementary school, she went on vacation with a friend to the beach.  When they went out to dinner, she ordered fried clowns.  Nobody knew what she was ordering...not the waiter...not the friend...not her friend's parents!  Poor thing, she never got her fried clams!  She still blames us!

My favorite of all is her "holiday mondegreen"!

We have "canberry sauce" for Thanksgiving!

And you know?  It makes sense!  Gotta love her!

But, sometimes I wonder what her boyfriend thinks.  Have they gone to a seafood restaurant together yet?

He probably wouldn't think anything about it...he's goofy, too!

Note:  I guess the whole reason for this post is that I'm missing her...thank goodness Thanksgiving break is around the corner!  Love you, 'Bama Girl...I'll have the canberry sauce ready!

Later,

Debbie

P.S.     Do you have a favorite mondegreen?

I am always messing up songs and hubby is always correcting me ( he loves it when I am wrong).

Hope your family enjoys the holidays together!

  2. Some mondegreens must be universal. My niece used to sing "Bald headed woman" when she was little. And my sister and I would sing "Bringing in the sheets" when we brought the laundry in off the clothes line for my mom--many years ago.
My sister and her friend used to sing "got a lot of lucky peanuts" (Frankie Vallee, got a lot of love between us).

  3. Thanks to you I have learned something new. When Jene` was very little she would sometimes ask me to rub her back.... then at times it would be scratch her back...... then one day she mixed it up and started calling it scrub my back and for some reason that stuck for years.

Oh by the way that pound cake sounds really good! Take Care :)

  5. I LOVED reading this post. It made me laugh. But the adorable pic of daughter and daddy made me smile ear to ear...so precious!!!
Okay, I have a funny one for you. I took a little friend to Church with me when we were about 10. The hymn repeated the word, "hosanna" a few times in the chorus. Afterwards she leaned over and asked, "Why are you singing 'Oh Santa'"? I think my shoulders were shaking from giggling. : )
    Happy Thanksgiving.

  6. That is too funny, Debbie! I never knew there was an actual term for messing up words... I do it all the time just to crack up my Hubby- but he does it not knowing he's actually messing it up! I heard him singing along with the National Anthem one time while we were watching a game and I nearly fell out of my chair laughing... he was like " what's so funny?" *LOL*

  7. Instead of calling the piece of furniture Chest of Drawers, I call it Chester Drawers. And Ibuprofen is I.B.Profen.

I'm loaded with plenty of them too.

    I hope y'all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

The pictures of Bama Girl are pretty btw!

  8. Hi Debbie! These flubs are too funny! My "creation" that I still giggle about (tho godonlyknows I do this ALL the time too!) is to the Irene Cara song from Flashdance. I know she is singing about "passion" but I hear the line "Put your pants on, and make it happen!"
